Am I being too direct?!
« on: October 27, 2016, 04:05:11 PM »
Hey everyone!
I recently applied 3 weeks ago & was put under consideration for Tonga 2017 last week. The issue is, is I've been milling around on old PCV blogs(who applied through the old application) and a few stated that one thing you should never be is direct about where you want to volunteer. The problem is is I was VERY(!) direct about where I wanted to volunteer(Tonga) in my statement and stated why, as well as discussing my prior experience volunteering in the Pacific.

Although they already put me under consideration for Tonga, I'm afraid a placement specialist will get my application, take one look at it and reject it because of my direct statements. Granted this fear came from reading blogs from volunteers in 2009 who didn't even have the option of selecting countries of choice, but did I make a mistake by appearing inflexible in my statement or have I safely passed through that issue once I placed under consideration?

And some background info on me:
I've volunteered teaching in the Pacific with another volunteer organization.
I have a masters degree in Family Therapy and an undergrad in Child Development.

Thanks for your help ahead of time,
Meka :P

I think that under the new system, directness is almost preferred. There are other ways to show your flexibility, which you can do during an interview.

Yeah, I was very straight forward with where I wanted to be and what sector I wanted to be placed in, and I got exactly what I asked for so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

When I applied I was very single minded and direct about only choosing one country for my options. The important part is making sure you have the opportunity to explain the why. In my interview I asked the interviewer if she had any reservations about me. She brought up my focus on only one country. After I gave her my justification things seemed to be better.
Just make sure you take the opportunity to explain the why and have a good answer prepared.

Exactly, directness saves time.
