"Under Consideration" notification received?
« on: November 24, 2013, 09:14:13 AM »
If you have found out you are "under consideration" (we used to call it "nominated"), tell us what country and type of work you will be doing?  And the approximate date you will be leaving.

... and congratulations!

I was nominated this past week for service in Cameroon, starting in September 2014.  The sector was listed as environment, but my recruiter told me it would be more of a business advising/agribusiness type position. Right now I'm waiting for my legal kit, I've been medically pre-cleared, and I'm beginning to teach myself French! I'm really interested to see how everything keeps panning out time-line wise, because I'll be graduating from college in May, and if I don't hear about an invitation before May, it makes everything tricky as far as planning for my next few years! I'm sure many other applicants are in this position- how is everyone else handling it? I have grad school offers, and I have also applied for some year-long fellowships that I'll have to give answers to within the next few months...

Nomination was received May 9, 2013. This was before locations were given. I was told to expect to depart "Early 2014" but I just was medically cleared last week. So I have no clue. I am suited for "Community Development." Which to means a variety of things. I chose Africa as a preference, but I have no clue.

Nominated for Moldova, June 2014 for NGO Advising under the COD program.

A little worried about the timeline, though, as June's coming up quick, haven't received medical or legal pre-clearance yet, and already seeing invites going out for the program!

I submitted my application on April 21, 2013 and had my phone interview mid-June. Nominated at the end of my phone interview (for a Spanish-speaking country, environmental work, tentatively Feb 2014) and submitted legal paperwork in a timely fashion. Received a questionnaire via email on Sept 11 and submitted it before the govt shut down. Then I anxiously awaited to hear more (I had become involved in a "romantic relationship" since my nomination, and this was one of the questions on the questionnaire). Expected a phone call or some other contact but no one reached out and alas I was invited on October 21, 2013 [exactly 6 months after I submitted my app] to leave for Panama (env.) on Feb 18th, 2014. :)

Nominated yesterday for service in Benin for environmental work, with a departure date in June 2014. Excited for the next steps and (hopefully!) an invitation! :)

Nominated for a health position in Zambia leaving in June 2014.  Sent my legal paperwork in last week, and I have been medically pre-cleared.  Waiting to be legally cleared and hopefully get an invitation soon!  I know people have already received an invitation for this job so I'm hoping I can still get a spot for this one.

I got nominated after my phone interview on  Dec 2nd for Primary Education in South Africa, leaving early July, 2014! I'm hoping that the timing will work out and that I receive paperwork in the next week to start the next step!

just something to think about.  Sometimes you don't go where you were nominated.  We were nominated for Eastern Europe and ended up going to Southern Africa.  You have to be ready for anything.

I received my nomination in May with no destination, area of service, or departure date.  Because ofsome Medical issues that I worked on I receive premedical clearance early in November.  Since I didn't hear from a placement recruiter by the end of Nov. I contacted a local recruiter who said to be patient but after reviewing my application said that I could check with the Educational Department and ask about Special Education.  I waited two weeks and emailed the Educational Department.  Last Friday I got a email saying that they have screen my application and will forward it to a placement recruiter and I should hear from them soon.  I still haven't heard from anyone but am hopeful that I may know more before Christmas.  I believe they have changed the system of nominations since May but that does leave people like me up in the air not knowing when, where, or what I will be doing in the Peace Corps.

One of the maddening things is thinking that the Peace Corps is just dragging its feet, with bureaucrats who go home on time every day rather than look at your paperwork. But from another perspective, the Peace Corps has to work with the government bureaucracies of more than 100 countries, and often the governments of those countries do not feel any sense of hurry. So be excited, read everything you can about service all over the world, yes study that French (the Alliance Francaise has some good classes, if there is one nearby), start making your list of things to take, cut it in half and then half again, and see and enjoy your friends, American foods, American beds and fast internet. But know that it is a long process, that you will learn to be more patient than you ever thought possible in the Peace Corps, and that process starts now. Take of bunch of pictures of friends, family, and American life. You will show them at your site, and find them comforting in those minutes in service when you wonder why you ever thought this was such a great idea. And it is a great idea.

Marion I was not given a region when nominated. It's a double edge sword, in some ways I am grateful for not knowing because I don't have my heart set on any one location (perferably in the continent of Africa.) Its not a big deal. On the other hand, I have no clue where (assuming I get the invite) and its a little disheartening.

I received my last email on Dec. 13th saying that "the Placement Office [#RequisitionCus:Sector#] Desk has screened my application and you may receive requests for additional follow-up to which we request you respond as soon as possible to expedite the placement process. Your file will be forwarded to a Placement Specialist for final invitation consideration after all requested information is received."
Since I have not received any requests for additional follow-up information I have just sent back another email requesting that I receive a Placement Recruiter or someone to communicate with regarding receiving a Peace Corps Invitation.  Hopefully with the Holidays over I may hear more information or have someone to talk to about my application"

I have been nominated for Nepal leaving September 2014.  My sector is Health Extension, although the positions in Nepal lean more towards agriculture I believe.  I'd love to go to a Russian speaking country as I would love to become fluent in Russian, but I'm open to going anywhere.  Here's hoping that I hear something soon!!

I was nominated back in May for Health in Cameroon September 2014. And then I got an email a few weeks ago and they wanted me to switch to Education in June 2014. Now I'm backed up my medical. So I guess (hopefully) it will be Health or Education sometime in the near future.
